HEC Paris

And Their Children After Them

HEC Paris is presented through Stéphanie Chaussoy’s May visit as both a business school and an image of the future she wants: a polished, competitive world whose students appear to know how power works. The campus confirms her ambition, while sharpening her belief that life outside Paris is second-rate.

A Campus Encounter

In May, Stéphanie visited the HEC Paris campus with a small group of classmates to get a feel for the school. The setting made its institutional resources visible: brightly lit offices, carefully tended flower beds, and high-tech equipment. Its professors struck her as lively and prophetic, and as better paid than marketing directors. The visit offered more than an impression of facilities; it gave Stéphanie a view of the people and outlook associated with the school.

An Image of Power

Stéphanie’s attention settled especially on the students. She saw them as lean as athletes, devoted to power, and beautiful in their certainty that they were the best. To her, they represented a caste trained to understand how the world worked and how to move its levers. She contrasted them with physicists, social-science scholars, politicians, philosophers, lawyers, film stars, and soccer players, whom she regarded as unable to grasp the forces shaping their era. In her imagination, the school’s economics students embodied a world of acceleration, money, and command.

Confirmation, Not an Admission

The visit made Stéphanie’s aspiration feel definite: this was what she wanted to do, and the kind of person she wanted to become. It also reinforced her existing sense that people outside Paris led second-class lives. That conviction gives HEC Paris significance beyond its campus in this episode: it becomes a measure of the distance between the life Stéphanie wants and the life she fears remaining within.

Her entrance-exam results arrived in early July. She was accepted at Lille, Lyon, and ESSEC Business School, and felt able to relax. Those results establish several routes forward, but do not say that she was admitted to HEC Paris. The school’s importance here rests instead on the ambition its visit crystallized.
